My training from those that had coordinated many citizens assemblies or smaller citizens jury’s pictured above told us 24 was a minimum number for proper community representation. With more volunteers the work can be shared further. This takes the danger of dominant “loud” voices establishing disproportionate influence.
Our Community Has the People Power
West Wight doesn’t lack willing people—it has a proven record of stepping up when it matters.
The Evidence
Across the UK, around 17–20% of adults volunteer monthly, with 41% taking part in civic activities each year.
Locally, we go further:
200+ volunteers mobilised in West Wight during COVID-19
696 volunteers through Ageing Better Isle of Wight
2,000+ residents in the Hampshire & IoW Voices panel
300+ organisations linked to Community Action Isle of Wight

Why It Works Here
People:
Rural communities have higher participation, especially among over-55s.
Places:
Village halls, community transport, and local hubs already exist.
Example: https://www.westwight.org.uk
Proof:
Where councils invest in coordination, volunteer impact rises sharply.
